Bangkok 2018; or What I Ate Around Siam

Ah, the end of 2018, the dawning of a new year.
A time for reflection.
Time I spent stuffing my face instead.

This trip was purely a food trip and this post is just about the awesome food I had.
No recommendations for tourist attractions here.
The attraction on this trip is food.

Over the last 4 months, I'd lost about 5 kg; I would spend the next 3 days looking for them.

What I Ate Around Siam, Bangkok

I checked in at the Amari Watergate Hotel where most of the food places I wanted to hit was within a 1 mile radius.

So you can take a nap after every meal.

Behold my recommendations:

1. Huapla Cheongnong Sea Junior (Central World)
The name is a mouthful, you know what else is a mouthful... Oh god, puns, let's not go there.

This is not where I first discovered the curry crab, but it's where I first discovered curry crab with the crab meat already peeled from the shell.
Game changer

For the uninitiated, t's kinda like curry flavoured instant noodle seasoning fried with scrambled egg with chilli oil and crab meat mixed in.

The first night we were there they ran out of crab meat so we had prawns instead.
The concept with prawns just doesn't blow my mind like crab does.

That bling on my wrist? Why yes it is an explorer, thanks for noticing
Besides the crab, we also tried their fried fish with secret sauce, sun-dried pork,  and their hotpot tomyam with fish, while good, not mind-blowing.

I came back to this restaurant a total of 3 times this trip.

They probably sprinkle cocaine on the curry crab.

Order the curry crab is what I'm saying.

2. Anong Noodle Restaurant

For people into sado-masochism, this boat noodle gem is located along a canal, North-East of Victory Monument.

Glass noodle in soup with liberal addition of chilli flakes and a dash of fish sauce.

They hurt so good.

weak, need water
If foreigner, they may ask if you want to omit the chilli and add them yourself after they've served.
Don't be a pussy.
You turn and look the waiter in the eye as if he has spat on you, you tell him he has dishonoured you, then request for double chilli.
The burning prolapsed anus later that day shall be a testament to your manhood.

They are served in bite sized portion, about 50 cents a bowl. So you get a pile of bowls stacked up, making you feel like a giant.

Make sure you order the fried pork skin too
A glass bottle of coke or water is also about 50 cents, and they've got ice in a small tin cup.
Love the retro, stuck in time feel of the place.

Got many locals, passing my litmus test for tourist traps.

To get there, get to the North East corner of the victory monument roundabout, then cross the canal

Turn left and you'll see some guy preparing the noodles

3. Somtom Nua (Siam Center)

Apparently famous for its papaya salad? Wouldn't know, I don't do vegetables.

I come here for the fish. Its other dishes are good, but I come for the fish.
And $5 for a whole fish? Yes, please.

Highly recommend the fried fish, either by itself with garlic or the spicy sauce.

4. After You Cafe

Been hooked on shibuya toast ever since my wife first dragged me to After You Cafe a couple of years ago.

This is a dessert cafe, serving mainly shibuya toasts and kakigori (shaved ice).

Shibuya; yes
Shibuya toast is basically a block of bread that has been cubed and topped with sweet delights, in this case, vanilla ice cream and nutella and ferrero rocher sprinkled for good measure.

You'll be spoilt for choice here with its many variations.

If you're wavering between shibuya vs kakigori, the choice should always be shibuya toast.

Kakigori; no... well maybe

Little fluffy pillows of orgasm, drizzled with a dreadfully decadent amount of butter, honey and ice cream.

There's always room for dessert here because bread is 99% air and air doesn't take up space. #truefacts #sciencebitch #trustmeimadoctor.

5. Audrey
 Another dessert spot.
This is more a filler spot. More like honorable mention.

Most of the stuff they were famous for ran out around 8.45 pm when I arrived, had to settle for a milo crepe which is nice, not too sweet.

But without trying their other more famous fares, I feel I cannot rate them.

Ambiance was nice though.

Would have liked to try Nhong Rim Klong and Raan Jay Fai for their crab omelette but unfortunately they were closed for the new year/ weekend.

Didn't try Khun Tong 2020 mainly because it was farther than what I was willing to travel, being lazy as I am, but friends have said the river prawns are heavenly.
In case you have not heard of Khun Tong 2020, click here for the viral video review

I also tried Nara Thai this trip, but given the price point, and the easy availability of good food in Thailand, it just wasn't worth it.
