A letter to our 2 month olds

Hello babies, it’s been two and half months since you two came into the world and it has been quite the roller coaster ride for us, your unsuspecting parents.

You babies were born on 5 December 2019, just a few weeks before your due date (27 December 2019). I was planning for you babies to arrive on 12 December 2019 (best day for papa given his limited leave) but you guys had your own ideas. My water broke on 4 December in the evening, I called your dad who was still at work, and caused him to be distracted for the rest of his shift. Your poop sent me to the hospital. We excruciatingly awaited your arrival. However labour did not go as well as we would have liked (my cervix did not dilate), and in the end the both of you were born by c-section. Liam came first at 8.47 pm, and Clementine followed 2 minutes later at 8.49 pm. Both of you had good strong cries and weighed about the same at 2.9+kg (though meimei was slightly heavier). And within a few minutes, papa and I went from a family of two to a family of 4!

Both of you have your own unique personality from the very beginning.

Liam, you were the louder one from the start. Actually even before you guys were born, Liam was the excitable one, constantly kicking (I knew because I always felt more kicks on one side). Though you were the slightly lighter twin initially, you very quickly caught up. Your appetite soon surpassed your meimei (drinking a consistent 120 ml to her 60-90 ml). Your tummy grew too, and you have quite the rounded belly and little fat folds (I am torn between being worried and finding it adorable). Currently your belly button is protruding out. It protrudes out even more when you grunt when you are upset (which also turns your face all red). You also wave your right hand (like a 招财猫) when you are upset which amuses your papa to no end. You drink so much all the time even when you’re so full and you end up puking. Your puke goes all over yourself, your clothes, swaddle and we would have to change everything. At 2 months your neck control is getting a lot better and papa can play rocket man with you!

Clementine you were more quiet and reserved, sometimes I would worry because I did not feel you kick for some time, and I would shine light or play music near my tummy to try to get you to kick. You adore bath times right from the start - warm water soothes you. And you would wail when you soil your diaper. Sometimes you would wake up when you poop yourself, and it would be so hard to put you back to sleep. Your cry is a warble, and your chin will tremble in despair, it is a 凄凉cry that tugs on our heartstrings and we would be at a loss at what to do. Now you are growing much more alert, playing with the toys we’ve got you. You would reach out and hit the toys hanging from your activity mat with your hands and legs. You’re learning to smile so much more, and you have the most lovely smile which melts papa’s heart. You are also in possession of a formidable RBF (resting bitch face), which you definitely got from me.

It is not all smooth sailing though. Your mama had to learn everything from scratch. There was this period when you guys were a few weeks old, where both of you would cry non stop for hours in the evening and you had to be held constantly. So tiring and we would have no idea what was wrong, we would feed, change your diaper, burp you but still you guys would cry. Especially you Liam because yours is the louder and more insistent cry. This would last into the night and the wee hours of the morning. And right now, you guys are not great sleepers. Very hard to settle you two to sleep, I have no idea why you two fight sleep when you are obviously tired. Maybe it is because your parents do not know how to put you down drowsy but awake.

And before I forget, both of you have spit all over us and shit on some of us too (mostly your popo, I have been lucky to avoid getting shat on). Both of you have formidable poonamis and your shit would leak EVERYWHERE (think clothes, yourself up to belly button, your swaddle, your rocker). Major cleaning exercise would follow after. And you guys have the cheek to smile at us after a big poop!

Both of you are growing so fast and developing so quickly. Papa and I returned from a 4 day trip and it feels like you guys have grown so much already!

Papa and mama’s hearts are so full. Wish you guys wouldn’t grow up so fast, but we also can’t wait for you to grow to be your own persons.
