A Review of Yakiniquest; Another Beef Birthday Dinner
Another year, another beef dinner to celebrate my wife's birthday.
This time she's looking decidedly less like a cow. This time she's not secretly pregnant.
The wife has once again requested for a yakiniku meal. Heard good things about Yakiniquest and wanted an omakase experience.
This is the the only kind of omakase I can go to with her, since I'm an uncultured barbarian that doesn't appreciate sushi and sashimi.
We ordered the Wagyu Lover Omakase at 128++ per person.
Only available to couples who are still very much in love, I'm told.
We started off with caramelised onions in soy sauce and I'm guessing beef tendons.
Similar flavour to what you would find on a beef don.
Some salad, I forced myself to eat it because Omakase, and because expensive.
For the starter beef they offer raw beef noodles and beef sashimi, or cooked beef. We decided to hedge our bets and got both sets to try.
Cooked beef was delicious.
Raw beef is something new we wanted to try. And now that we’ve tried it, we’re sure we like our beef cooked.
Can’t help thinking that we would enjoy this a lot if we could char it a little.
Tenderloin. Just like Yen Yakiniku, no char, not their fault I suppose. It’s meant to be this way…
A loin cut.
Karubi and ball tip
The karubi was so good with that sweetness you get with yakiniku marinates. Loved the flavour and sear. Loved it so much we ordered an a la carte serving.
Sirloin sukiyaki, didnt quite get why raw egg yolks are involved, but it felt fun. You beat the egg yolk into the soy sauce then dip the meat.
Ribeye “meat cake”. There’s no extra meat it’s just the portion that comes with your meal that they’ve dressed up. Was hoping for some complimentary thing but oh well…
Ribeye was cooked slightly disappointingly. Sear was alright, but the temperature control was subpar and was a touch more towards medium/ medium well, rather than medium rare.
Verdict?
Interesting omakase experience. Wife would be keen to do this again but not really for me. If you are new to yakiniku (unlikely), or like to try a variety of cuts, cuts you may not necessarily think to order a la carte, this is for you. However if you have tried the cuts before and like me, what you like and what you am willing to order for what price point, then perhaps this is not the best bang for your buck.
As for the execution by the restaurant, well executed mostly, at the price point, no major complaints.
